What is a Haori (羽織)?

A haori (羽織) is a traditional Japanese jacket worn over a kimono, similar to a coat but shorter in length than a full overcoat. It is typically worn open or loosely fastened at the front with small ties (haori himo), though it was historically only worn closed by samurai.
