What is the Japanese Symbolism of a Phoenix and Pine?

Antique Japanese Obi fabric in a green and gold pattern of a phoenix and young pine
The phoenix is an imaginary bird, which is thought to be a composite of several creatures. Legend has it that its appearance occurs in times of peace and harmony. The mythical phoenix is a favored motif for celebratory garments. The Wakamatsu (young pine) motif has been associated with Japanese New Year, renewal, and longevity in Japan since the Heian period (794 to 1185). This magnificent pillow pattern features an antique Japanese silk from a Maru obi (most formal Japanese sash) that dates from the early Showa era (1926-1989) or Taisho era (1912-1926). The textile is masterfully woven in shades of green punctuated by shimmering gold foil threads.
