Japanese Symbolism In This Vintage Silk With 'karako' Pattern

This delightful pillow features a vintage Japanese silk from a Maru obi (most formal Japanese sash) that dates from the Taisho era (1912-1926) or early Showa era (1926-1945). Technique: dye. The textile is Shioze silk and has a smooth touch. The pattern depicts 'karako' (Chinese children) pushing and pulling a flower cart while others are engaged in various activities amongst a myriad of auspicious symbols. The karako symbolize longevity or continuity with health for sons and daughters. The flower cart displays flowers from all seasons, which made this obi appropriate for wear throughout the year.
