Japanese Symbolism In This Vintage Silk With Boats and Bridges

This striking pillow features a vintage Japanese silk from a Maru obi (most formal Japanese sash) that dates from the early Showa era (1926-1945) or Taisho era (1912-1926). Technique: weave. There are treasure symbols ('takara zukushi') on the sails of the boats, including cloves (because of their expense and use as a cure in old times, they represent immortality) and the magical mallet (when swung, wishes come true).  The wave pattern here is 'seigaiha', which is symbolic of blue ocean waves that are harbingers of peace and good fortune. The pine tree is very meaningful even today in Japan. It signifies longevity, virtue, and steadfastness. The pine tree is associated with winter and it is an emblem of the Japanese New Year that represents renewal and a bright and hopeful future.
